Caring For Caregivers During The Holiday Season

For funeral home and cemetery personnel and client families, the holiday season is particularly difficult. There is no way around it: The holiday season is stressful!

Death causes people to change their attitudes. For client families, tension among family members can already be heightened and dealing with a death during the holidays can make it worse.

For us "front liners," we can be overwhelmed. Owners and managers need to take time and meet with the entire staff about emotions they may deal with during the holidays. For one, normal schedules can be disrupted. Demands on your time can be challenging; time can take on a new meaning for you and client families.

What are some things caregivers can do to cope?

bulletDon’t feel you have to do it all yourself. Ask for help, especially with task-oriented duties
bulletOrganize as much as you can. To help get important things done, make a written list for yourself.
bulletTake more time. Do not rush yourself or client families. Just as they may require more "hand holding" at this time, so will you.
bulletShare difficulties you may be experiencing with your manager or the owner. Having a "partner" to talk things out with can be a wonderful resource.
bulletAllow yourself time to unwind. When you feel stressed, take a break, go for a short walk, listen to music or meditate.
bulletMaintain social contacts. Focusing on non-work related activities will help you keep your emotional balance.

May peace, joy and health be with all of you.

But I heard him exclaim ere he drove out of sight,

"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night."
