I asked this question to funeral directors that participated in a recent NFDA web seminar. More than likely, some are still working at the answer. This is OK. Being BEST is not just making more or bigger sales. It’s to advance your life and yourself. How you become recognized by others will determine how willing people are to interact with you, be loyal to you, refer others to you, give testimonials for you, and compensate you. Here’s a twist for you: If your customers do not consider you BEST, then they will try their best to lower your price, or simply buy from someone else. I am striving to be the BEST at what I do by continuously studying, reading, thinking, observing, speaking, writing and interacting with leaders from other businesses and professions. I try to write about the process of dealing with funeral consumers when I had a practice. Many owners and arrangers...even corporate entities...focus on monthly stats, annual revenues, getting a raise, and making the ‘president’s club.’ These are all OK, but none have the word BEST attached to them. If you’re doing your BEST, eventually you’ll become BEST. Look back over the past 5 years...Have you grown? Have you gotten better? Yes, probably. Could you have done more? Did you only do what you had to do to get by? Here’s an easier way to ask that question: Which did you spend more time at: reading or watching television? Even though you might qualify, do you really want to be recognized as the BEST television watcher in your community, business, and profession? BEST is tough and elusive...it’s at the core of hard work. And by the way, BEST does not only apply to your job or profession. BEST also applies to husband/wife, dad/mom, or friend.
