What do I need to learn and do to get ahead?

I receive many calls from colleagues during the week who ask me: I want to get ahead. I want to improve. I want to increase revenue. I want to do "it" differently. Can you coach me? Listed below are some of the Realities and Strategies of improving your business, your income and personal satisfaction from your work. Your job: Plan to implement each one.

  1. Get and stay likeable. My Dad taught me that people enjoy doing business with people they like. The customer buys you first. Sell yourself before you try to sell your company or product.
  2. Make a list of what you say you do that your competition does not say they do. If you don’t have much on your list, ouch! Get creative...say something new. (Hint: Add new powerful questions that your competition does not ask! Many can be found on my website under "Power Questions.")
  3. Get rid of existing objections you hear over and over. Write them down (price too high, not interested, I don’t want a funeral, etc.) Assemble new answers that win instead of what you now use. I am available to help you.
  4. When you hear or learn a new strategy, take action: Do it. Use it with the next client family or telephone inquiry. Listening followed by doing leads to mastery.
  5. Get and keep a positive attitude by studying attitude every morning. Read positive information when you wake up.
  6. Learn how to get better at presentation skills. These skills are as critical as sales skills. Study the way you make arrangements or present merchandise; if necessary, use a video camera. What changes should be made? What words do you use that are not effective or consumer-friendly? What are your hands doing?
  7. Stay a student. Ok, you’ve got your degree; you’ve finished mortuary college. Now it’s time to focus on your life career! The best way to become a master at what you do is to combine "study" with "practice"...for the rest of your life.
  8. The daily dose. You can’t do it all at once. You’ve heard, "An apple a day," but few follow this advice. If you do nothing each day – at the end of a year that adds up to nothing. If you do a little bit each day, at the end of a year it adds up to a lot. You don’t improve your business and life in a day – you do it day by day.

Getting ahead is a result of a person’s dedication and determination. You are in complete control. You decide how much you want to get ahead. You decide how much you want to succeed. You decide on how much action to take.
